Maya Angelou (1928-2014) was an acclaimed American author, poet, and civil rights activist, well known for her autobiographical works including “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Working alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. , she was viewed as an influential spokesperson for the Black community. She received a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2010 along with numerous awards and accolades during her lifetime.
